Billings - what is this?

This is the creation of invoices to customers detailing supplies of products or
services to the customer. This tends to be completely on a cyclical basis i.e. weekly,
monthly or annually. Equally for a business supplying products to its customers, this
can be completed on an ad hoc basis.
Obviously this is a critical part of revenue generation (sales!!) and therefore
represents the essence of your business i.e. the reason why you are in business.

It also represents the end of a process i.e. it follows the delivery of product(s) or
service(s) and the beginning of other processes such as credit control and
ultimately cash generation.

Credit control - what is this?

This follows the raising of invoices to customers and ends with the receipt of a cheque
or BACS in settlement of invoices raised. Good for business cash flow!

This requires a very specialist skill set that follows the 'firm but fair'
negotiation with your customers. All bills raised should be settled by your customers
on or before their due date. If this does happen, there will be no need for credit control
unless this activity ensures this does happen by ensuring, for example, that your
invoice has been passed for payment as required.

A prerequisite for efficient credit control is:
1. Inclusion of all references on the invoice as required by the customer. An example
would be a purchase order reference number.
2. Accurate customer contact details including names and numbers.
3. Supporting commercial agreements.
4. Agreed credit control process.

The 'firm but fair' approach ensures good customer relationships with efficient debt
collection. It requires the credit controller to see through excuses and manage round
them!
